The Importance of Child Safety Seats
Child safety seats are not an inconvenience dreamed up to get more money from parents. Studies have shown that an average of around 500 children per day are killed or injured in car accidents, and that number can be greatly reduced by using child safety and booster seats. The safety of our children is a primary responsibility of all adults, and should be taken seriously.
If your child weighs less than 40 pounds, they should probably be using a child safety seat, simply termed a “car seat” or “baby seat” by many parents. This device is specially designed to be securely fastened into place, and keep the child from harm during all but the most serious of accidents, and reduce the injuries even in those.
Tips For Child Safety Seat Use:
- Check the seat's credentials.
- Use the right size safety seat.
- Follow installation instructions.
- Do not use “shortcuts” .
- Always us a safety seat.
Many parents, irrationally, will decide that a quick trip to the local store won't require a safety seat for a child. The sad truth is that most automobile accidents occur close to home, and even a routine trip could become part of an unexpected roadway accident. If your child should be using a safety seat, put them in it, even for a short jaunt.
After they each a weight of around 40 pounds, it is time for your child to graduate from their “baby seat” to a booster seat. Even though the child is no longer a baby, they ae still too small for conventional seatbelts to much use, but a booster chair raises them to a height that allows conventional safety devices to function properly. Until your children have reached a height of at least 4'9”, they depend on you o make them safe by using te correct equipment.
And one final note on booster seats: Avoid the ones with a plastic arm or “shield,” and get one that simply lifts the child up and makes use of the seatbelts the vehicle already uses. Research has shown that shield-type seats are not effective in preventing injury, and some studies indicate that they may even complicate or increase the injuries suffered. Most companies have stopped producing these shield-type seats, but they are still commonly available at thrift stores and other discount locations. Don't settle for a cheap product when your child's life is at stake.
